FDA Advises Consumers Not to Use Numerous Companies’ Hand-Sanitizer Products Manufactured with Methanol (Wood Alcohol)
 
 
In these uncertain times of critical personal hygiene caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, some manufacturers have sought to profit by selling a variety of “hand sanitizer” products containing dangerous amounts of a toxic and potentially lethal chemical: methanol, aka wood alcohol.
 
Methanol is a type of alcohol (aka wood alcohol, methyl alcohol), chemical formula CH3OH, that is used primarily to make industrial products like solvents, fuels, and antifreeze.  Unlike ethanol (ethyl alcohol), methanol is poisonous and unfit for human consumption.  Human exposure can occur through both ingestion and skin absorption.  Exposure to methanol can cause severe symptoms including nausea and vomiting, headaches, disturbed vision and blindness, and seizures.  It can also result in permanent nervous-system damage, coma, and even death.
 
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), methanol “is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and should not be used due to its toxic effects.”
 
But the FDA has found that numerous manufacturers have been marketing hand-sanitizer products containing dangerous amounts of methanol.  This began with the FDA finding methanol in nine products manufactured by Mexican manufacturer “Eskbiochem SA.”  For example, FDA testing found that Eskbiochem’s “Lavar Gel” contains 81 percent methanol (and no ethyl), and “CleanCare” contains 28 percent methanol.
